How To Cite VBRN

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the NIH, which funds Vermont Biomedical Research Network, requires that we acknowledge them as the source of funding that supports your work. You must cite VBRN on all publications, presentations, press releases, requests for proposals, bid invitations, or any other documents or applications that describe projects or programs that were supported by VBRN, including if:

  • Your work benefited from the use of VBRN purchased equipment in your lab, a shared resource, or core facility.
  • You are using data or tools generated in a VBRN Core Facility
  • An VBRN sponsored student worked in your lab.
  • You received money from VBRN that contributed to your research or career.

PLEASE help us to comply with their requirement by using the citation below and the VBRN logos where appropriate. VBRN logos may be downloaded here.

Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN) Publication Citation for VBRN Funded Research from 6/1/2012-05/31/2028

Research reported in this (publication, project, release) was supported by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under grant number P20GM103449. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of NIGMS or NIH.

**You may also add specific details related to the core facility you worked with. For example, “All target preparation and primary data analysis were performed by the VBRN Proteomics Facility”.

Vermont Biomedical Research Network (VBRN) Publication Citation for Citing VBRN Funded Research from 9/30/2001-5/31/2011

Research reported in this (publication, release) was supported by an Institutional Development Award (IDeA) from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under grant number P20RR016462. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of NIGMS or NIH.

Acknowledgement of Federal Funding (Please Read Carefully)

In addition to citing the grant in the original manuscript, you are required to link the final publication to the grant after it is accepted, following the instructions below (add anchor to instructions below). Citing the grant alone does not result in a link to our grant that is visible to NIH

Acknowledgement of Federal Funding

As required by HHS appropriations acts, all HHS grantees must acknowledge Federal funding when issuing statements, press releases, requests for proposals, bid invitations, and other documents describing projects or programs funded in whole or in part with Federal money.  Grantees are required to state (1) the percentage and dollar amounts of the total program or project costs financed with Federal money and (2) the percentage and dollar amount of the total costs financed by nongovernmental sources.

NIH Open Access Policy

NIH requires all VBRN funded research publications meet the NIH Open Access Policy upon acceptance in a journal. Utilizing VBRN resources in your work and citing the VBRN grant number will trigger this requirement. Submitting the work, either as the final peer reviewed manuscript or the published article, to PubMed Central (PMC) meets this requirement. NIH maintains a list of journals that submit articles to PMC automatically on behalf of authors. For journals that do not automatically submit on behalf of authors, it is your responsibility to make certain this requirement is met. If any one of our publications is not in compliance with the NIH Open Access policy, NIH may withhold funds from VBRN.

Grant applications containing citations of previous work that were in any way funded by the NIH must also comply with the NIH Open Access policy or the grant budget may be withheld. Ensuring that your research publications comply with the Open Access policy at the time of acceptance will facilitate this part of your future grant applications.

Instructions for Linking the VBRN Grant to Publications (even if you didn’t cite in the original manuscript)

NIH and grant reviewers may check the VBRN Director/PI’s grant record to see how many publications related to VBRN Awards or other resources are linked to the grant. It is possible to go into your existing publications in your myNCBI account and pair the grant to them, even if you did not cite the grant in the original manuscript. This takes ~5 minutes and instructions are below:

  1. Go into MyNCBI: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/account/. Your login will be the same one that you used to create your “My Bibliography” for NIH Biosketch purposes. Other login options are available.
  2. After login, click on your login name in the top right corner to check your Account settings to make sure that MyNCBI is linked to NIH and the eRA Commons. If it is already linked, you will see the words “eRA Login” under “Linked Accounts”. Otherwise, click “Change” and add NIH and eRA Commons from the dropdown menu. (Important: You will not be able to add the link to our grant unless you have linked MyNCBI and the eRA Commons)
  3. Go back to “MyNCBI” homepage.
  4. Choose the article to which you want to add the grant citation.
  5. Click on “Manage Citations” on the top left and choose “Manage Awards”.
  6. Select the “Search/Add other awards” tab and enter the VBRN Director/PI’s name (Christopher Francklyn). Select the grant and close: P20 GM103449 – Vermont Genetics Network – Vermont INBRE

Important: All publications that were supported at least in part by NIH and linked to VBRN must have a PMCID (different from an automatically assigned PMID). To get the PMCID, follow the directions under “Public Access Compliance” to the right of each article listed in your MyNCBI. Deposit to PMC (and assignment of the PMCID) complies with NIH’s Open Access Policy (https://publicaccess.nih.gov/policy.htm).

Send us PDF files of your publications and let us know if any grant applications are awarded. This will enable us to demonstrate our involvement in the research of many laboratories across the network and aid in the procurement of future awards, including funds for student and faculty research and equipment for our Cores.

Contact vbrn@uvm.edu if you have any questions or run into any issues citing the award. We are here to help!

By signing this agreement, you accept your responsibility to appropriately acknowledge both specific VBRN Core Facilities and the VBRN grant as outlined above and that publications of your research in a journal will meet the requirements of the NIH OpenAccess Policy.
